Sara Stephens

I am currently a fifth year PhD Candidate at Cornell University, working with Daniel Halpern-Leistner.
I'm interested in algebraic geometry, specifically moduli theory, algebraic stacks and enumerative geometry.

Before coming to Cornell, I completed my undergraduate degree at Queen's University (Kingston).
I am fortunate to be supported by an NSERC PGS-D award.

My email is srs382 at cornell dot edu.

Spring 2025: Ithaca High School Math Seminar Instructor
Fall 2022, Spring 2023: Math 2940, Linear Algebra for Engineers (Cornell University)

Outreach & Activities

I am very interested in mathematical outreach and community involvement. Here are some of the things I have done at Cornell...

In Spring 2025, I taught a three-month course on at Ithaca high school, through the IHS Math Seminar Program.
We studied computational algebraic geometry. After the seminar, I mentored two students on a followup project studying combinatorics coming from moduli spaces of curves.

Spring 2024: GRASSHOPR fellow, teaching geometry in a local elementary school.
Spring 2023: Co-organized the Olivetti Club, Cornell's weekly graduate student seminar.
April 2023: Co-organized the math workshop at Expanding Your Horizons with Nikhil Sahoo.
March 2023: Co-organized a session of Math Explorers Club with Colby Kelln.
Fall 2022: Co-organized the Cornell Math Department's mentoring program for incoming graduate students along with Mark Schachner.
April 2022: Co-organized the math workshop at Expanding Your Horizons with Nicki Magill.
March 2022: Co-organized Cornell's Julia Robinson Math Festival.
Spring 2022, Fall 2023: Mentor for Cornell's Directed Reading Program. I mentored undergaduate students on Lie groups & Riemann surfaces.
